Yes.
The focus on this course is real-world scenarios. Both the lab and the coursework is designed to help the student understand what a penetration tester runs into in corporate testing scenarios. This is not a “learn to hack” class or a class that requires that you already be a penetration tester in order to learn. The instructor has extensive knowledge of large corporate enterprise systems and uses this in developing test scenarios so that they match actual scenarios that he has seen or has worked with in the “wild”. One of the benefits of the virtual lab is that it contains multiple machines so that the student can practice their skills in a variety of ways within the lab environment.
A basic understanding of Linux and networking will help. With this being a beginners course, a lot of the material will walk the students step-by-step through the overall process and explain what we’re doing.
For the labs to work (and the homework to be completed), the students will need a PC or Mac capable of running a virtual machine. The lab is tuned to run at 4GB but more is always better, 4GB is a good minimum for any aspiring penetration tester. The virtual machine used for labs is VMWare and the first class is dedicated to setting up the lab and learning how to use the tools.
The most important part of the course is the virtual penetration testing lab, which is actually a kind of a simulator, which contains all the tools needed to perform penetration testing but also an enviroment with various vulnerabilities, so you will be able to learn on the real-life situations. Provided lessons and homeworks would require your active work on this lab. So definitely this course is a good preparation for you to become a penetration tester.
